Media Consolidation Visualization

posted by Noah at 10:30 AM

Mother Jones magazine has created this lovely chart (PDF) showing the continued consolidation of the media over the last 25 years from multiple players to a mere 8 companies. It was included as part of a feature on newspaper deregulation: Breaking The News.

Interesting chart but I'd like to refer you to this Washington Post article, which points out that the media is not owned by a select few.

There are many many media choices out there yet the traditional mediums are struggling to compete, which is why my organization, the national association of broadcasters, is looking to the FCC to bring its rules up to date with the modern marketplace.

Don't forget that citizens depend on local broadcasters every single day.

It seems when they "update" rules and regulations they emasculate them! Instead of Transparency, Oversight, and Accountability we get Self Regulation, Preditory Business pratices, and Corporate Welfare.

TV today is CRAP! the NEWS is Entertainment instead of Information. We have had a Activist Conservative Corporate Friendly Judicary DECIDE that the Media has NO OBLIGATION to tell the TRUTH, no obligation to the Community! NEWS today is Enteratainment. This is a crime!

The Press is specificaly mentioned in the Constitution, because a Democracy requires an Informed Electorate, it should never be allowed to be HIJACKED by Corporate Thugs who would use it to subvert democracy and loot our country by making the Media a lobbying platform disguised as entertainment!

We should all reconize the danger in the things that erode Democracy, those who destroy our Checks & Balances and corrupt our system like Media Monopolies, Corporate Bullies, Robber Barrons, Corrupt Judges and politicians! It's our duty to Reconize and Fight these pathogens that contaminate and infect our Democracy.
