Must Watch - Food,Inc

posted by Djouls at 7:31 AM
Must Watch on Sprword.com show many documentaries telling about parts of reality that global medias do not usually question or talk about and that stay unanswered by governments.

One of them is Food, Inc. by filmmaker Robert Kenner. "He lifts the veil on The USA's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment.
We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli’Äîthe harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Food, Inc.
reveals surprising’Äîand often shocking truths’Äîabout what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here."

The Yes Men need your help!

posted by Mica at 4:23 PM
It may be economically tough times but The Yes Men are hiring!

Flavorwire reports that these ever-pranking, culture-jamming, do-gooders have put out an open call for help on a new project. Perhaps they are gearing up for the US theatrical release of their new movie The Yes Men Fix The World.

Here's the scoop:
Help the Yes Men! The Yes Men need your help! If you live in New York, legendary cultural jammers the Yes Men and friends need you now to pull off some large-scale shenanigans in September. It’Äôll be fun and stupid, and it’Äôll create a splash in the media. Your work COULD get seen by millions! To volunteer, please contact larken@artevolve.org. Here’Äôs what they need: * People who can sew or build things. * People who know how to shoot and edit video and have their own equipment. * People who enjoy wearing deeply ridiculous costumes in potentially perilous situations. The work will go on for four weeks starting now. You can volunteer for any length of time that you like. The location will be: 342 Maujer, Bushwick (L train to Grand Street) www.houseofyes.org

all I can say to this is... um...YES!

post script: I noticed that all of my friends fall neatly into the 3 categories listed in this - coincidence? I think not.

Tales of a 4th Grade Something...

posted by Noah at 8:00 AM
There are teachers that you never forget, teachers that change your life for the better and make the world a better place one student at a time. For people going to public school in Richmond, Virginia in the 80's (like my sister and myself) John Hunter was one of those teachers. So it isn't surprising (but completely delightful) to discover that he's still at it all these years later in Charlottesville, Virginia. He and a cooperative game he developed are now the subject of a new documentary by Rosalia Films called "World Peace: and other 4th-grade achievements". World Peace requires young students to grapple and resolve real-world problems in a way that ends not with a bang but with a cheer. The trailer, which is quite moving (though not embeddable), can be seen HERE.

Here John talks briefly about the game:

For more about the game and John read this recent Christian Science Monitor article HERE.

The Church of Now

posted by Noah at 9:43 AM
Obama's inclusion of "nonbelievers" in his inaugural address reminded me of a project I worked on a few years ago. My friend Andy Deemer asked me if I would help him out with My God a documentary he was making about starting a new religion. One of the two people whom he had chosen to follow in the film was Josh Boden, who had created The Church of Now (also know as Nowism), which featured such tenants as "Laughter is a MUST!" and "Everything is contextual". This punk rock styled anti-religion, which had meetings in bars, needed a graphic identity so I was hired to do some branding concepts. Playing off of the irreverance of the concept, the aesthetic of punk rock show flyers, and the language Josh was using to describe his "church" I developed a series of initial concepts (shown). They went over quite well with Josh, though sadly the church never really caught on and I don't think the designs were ever used. The film is currently in limbo as Andy works on other projects, including promoting Poultrygeist, which he produced for Troma recently, though he has plans to return to My God eventually.
